What is Escitalopram?

Escitalopram is a medication used to treat depression and certain types of anxiety disorders.

Before Taking

Tell your doctor if you have:

• Bipolar disorder (or family history)
• Diabetes, heart, kidney, or liver problems
• Seizures or history of convulsions
• Suicidal thoughts (past or present)
• If you’re pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Any allergies to escitalopram, citalopram, or other medicines

How to Take It

• Take by mouth, with or without food (with food if it upsets your stomach).
• Take at the same time each day.
• Do not stop suddenly—your doctor will guide you if you need to taper off.
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. If it’s close to the next dose, skip it—don’t double up.

Interactions

Avoid use with:

• MAO inhibitors, St. John’s Wort, venlafaxine, citalopram
• Certain diet pills, migraine medicines, blood thinners, NSAIDs, and some HIV/TB drugs

Always give your doctor a full list of medications, supplements, or substances you use.

While Taking Escitalopram

• Effects may take 1–2 weeks (sometimes longer).
• Watch for worsening depression, mood changes, or suicidal thoughts.
• May cause dizziness, drowsiness, or dry mouth—avoid alcohol and be careful with driving/machinery.
• Do not stop suddenly; tapering is required.

Possible Side Effects

Seek medical help right away if you notice:

• Allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing)
• Confusion, hallucinations, seizures
• Severe mood changes or suicidal thoughts
• Unusual bleeding or bruising

Common, mild side effects:

• Headache, nausea, blurred vision
• Changes in appetite or sex drive
• Increased sweating
