Emsam (Selegiline Patch)

Use:
Emsam is a prescription medicine used to treat major depressive disorder.

How to Use:

• Apply exactly as prescribed. Do not use more than directed.
• Do not stop suddenly—your doctor will guide you on how to stop safely.
• It may take several weeks before you notice improvement.
• While using Emsam (and for 14 days after stopping), avoid foods high in tyramine (like aged cheeses, cured meats, soy products, draft beer). Eating these foods may dangerously raise blood pressure.
• Store patches at room temperature away from heat and moisture.

Dosage:
Typical starting dose: 6 mg/24 hours patch applied once daily.

Missed Dose:
If you forget a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double up.

Safety Information:
Do not use Emsam if you:

• Are allergic to selegiline
• Have an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma)
• Are scheduled for surgery
• Have recently taken certain antidepressants, pain medicines, stimulants, cold remedies, or MAO inhibitors (must wait 14 days, or 5 weeks after stopping Prozac).

Tell your doctor if you have:

• Heart problems, blood pressure issues
• Seizures or epilepsy
• Bipolar disorder, depression history, or suicide risk

⚠️ Young adults (<24 years) may have a higher risk of suicidal thoughts when starting. Family and caregivers should monitor mood changes.

Pregnancy/Breastfeeding:
Not enough data is available. Use only if clearly needed—discuss with your doctor.

Possible Side Effects:

• Serious (call your doctor immediately): sudden headache, vision/speech problems, chest pain, fainting, seizure, severe mood changes, suicidal thoughts.
• Common: dry mouth, constipation, cough, sore throat, patch site redness, sexual side effects, loss of appetite, mild stomach issues.

Storage:
Keep at 20–25°C (68–77°F), away from children and pets.
