Buspirone (Buspar) – Patient Information

What it’s used for

Buspirone is an anti-anxiety medication. It is commonly prescribed to manage general anxiety, OCD, and social anxiety (social phobia). Your doctor may also recommend it for other conditions.

How to take it

• Take by mouth with a glass of water, with or without food.
• Swallow tablets whole – do not cut, crush, or chew.
• Take only as prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
• It may take several weeks before you feel the full effect.

Precautions

• Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Buspirone or have other allergies.
• Inform your doctor if you have bipolar disorder, eye problems, liver disease, or kidney disease.
• Avoid alcohol and grapefruit/grapefruit juice while taking this medication.
• Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects.
• Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and under medical supervision.
• Pregnant women should avoid direct handling of the medicine.

Possible side effects

Common:

Buspirone may interact with:

• Alcohol
• Grapefruit products
• Haloperidol
• Rifampicin

Missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double up.

Overdose

Seek emergency help right away. Symptoms may include chest pain, irregular heartbeat, nausea, fainting, or feeling light-headed.

• Keep at room temperature (20–25°C / 68–77°F).
• Store away from light, moisture, and heat.
• Do not keep in the bathroom.
• Keep out of reach of children and pets.
